Professional face painters should be using safe products -- products that are made for use on skin, and that meet government safety and cosmetic regulations. When you hire a face painter, make sure you ask them what products they are using.
Professional face paints are made using cosmetic grade ingredients. They, or the ingredients used in them, have been tested for allergic
reactions.
Craft paints and other "non-toxic" colorants (washable markers; watercolor pencils, markers, or paints; Sharpie permanent
markers and the like) are not intended for use on skin. Many contain ingredients that can cause allergic reactions, such as rashes
and itching. Others (washable markers and Sharpie markers in particular) are very difficult to remove.
Cosmetic glitter is intended
to be used on people; craft glitter is NOT. It is made of polyester, is .008mm or less in diameter, and is cut in a hexagonal
shape. These qualities make it safer for use on skin than craft glitter because it isn't made of metal and doesn't have sharp edges.
Please make sure you check what products your face painter is using before you hire them!
